Stilling Day

As the deer longs for running streams, so my soul longs for you, O God.(Psalm 42 v1)

In our age and fast paced lifestyle - paying attention to God's personal communication to you is no easy task. Rev Richard Coles in his autobiography writes "It is difficult to accustom ourselves to silence in a world of relentless noise; difficult to simply surrender, to let go of our needs, to ignore our internal commentaries, with all their evasions and incompleteness, and to tune in to God's frequency, to find the signal among the static.”

Stilling days are about deliberately making space for oneself and God. I have found in my own life regular days of silence away from usual distractions are important to allow my longings, fears and desires to surface and bring these before God. It’s a day when you can leave some of the usual busyness of life behind focus on the Lord.

With consultation with you around your groups needs, I am able to shape the theme and content for the day. A stilling day might focus on a piece of scripture, a gospel passage or maybe come at a particular season in the liturgical calender. Using music, imagery, reflection and liturgy I can curate and lead a day which will open the way for people to encounter God.

There is a danger of stifling a stilling day with too many words and activity. This isn’t a day of teaching and theological input. God works in the spaces, in the silences of our lives and the silences within. My role is to hold the space well and attune peoples hearts to hear God’s individual message for them.
